Determining aerosol particles by in-air micro-IL analysis combined with micro-PIXE

Growing interests are being paid for the behaviour of several kinds of aerosols, known as a long-distance transmission medium of microbes and the viruses in the atmosphere. In this study a new microscopic spectroscopy and imaging system of ion-microbeam-induced luminescence (Ion-Luminescence, IL) is being developed on the beam line of micro-PIXE analysis system of a 3 MV single-ended accelerator at Takasaki TIARA facility, TARRI, JAEA. Individual imaging and analysis of specific kind of aerosols targets were performed using this system for the characterization of fluorescence properties of micrometer-sized particulate aerosols. Then the monochromatic IL images were obtained from several aerosol particles with wavelength at a band around 415 nm and 430 nm. The IL spectra obtained from aerosol target were also observed to be clearly different from those of other silicon dioxide particles.

Fabrication of micro-prominences on PTFE surface using proton beam writing

The unique microstructures were created at PTFE surface using proton beam writing. A conical structure about 250 $$mu$$m high were formed, when 3 MeV proton microbeam scanned spirally from the center at 500-$$mu$$m-thick PTFE surface. The structure was porous and the shape of the bottom corresponded to the beam scan pattern. The formation was caused by the volume expansion of the sample induced by the temperature elevation and the gas generation during the proton beam irradiation. The conical structure was fabricated by the upward volume expansion gradually advanced along the beam scan path.

TIARAのサイクロトロンでは、重イオンを用いたマイクロビーム照射実験が行われる。マイクロビーム形成装置として、集束方式とコリメーション方式によるものが備わっており、調整が比較的容易な後者については、炭素,ネオンやアルゴンなど一連のイオンビームを用いた細胞照射実験が頻繁に行われている。サイクロトロンの調整には3時間を要するが、一回の照射実験は1.5から3時間程度と短い。スケジュール管理によりサイクロトロン調整時間を削減しているが、それにも限界がある。カクテルビーム加速により調整時間を減らすことに成功したが、同一の質量電荷比(M/Q)を持つイオン以外へは切換できない。そこで、マイクロビーム照射で使われる重イオンビームを短時間で切り換えるために、スケーリング手法を新たに導入した。この手法は、イオンのM/Qが異なる場合でもビームの磁気剛性が一定になるように調整することで同一のレンズパラメータによりビームの輸送を可能にする。サイクロトロン本体ではイオン種ごとに磁場分布の再形成が必要となるが、ビーム位相自動計測システムを開発して調整時間を短縮した。炭素220MeVを基準ビームとしてスケーリング法による加速実験を行い、ネオン255MeV, 335MeV及びアルゴン440MeVビームへそれぞれ20分程度の調整時間で切り換えることに成功した。

Irradiation of thin diamond detectors and radiation hardness tests using MeV protons

Two 50-$$mu$$m thick transmission type single ion detectors made of high purity scCVD diamond and of silicon, for each, have been partially (50$$times$$50 $$mu$$m$$^{2}$$ area) irradiated with 4.5-MeV proton microbeam at the Zagreb heavy ion microprobe facility, introducing almost homogeneous vacancy production over the whole device. IBIC measurement was performed during irradiation to monitor signal amplitude degradation as online and also to evaluate the ion fluence at the same time. Irradiation process was terminated when approximately 6% signal reduction was observed for each detector. The radiation damage of charge collection efficiency (CCE) of the scCVD diamond detector was further investigated using 2-MeV proton microbeam as an IBIC probe as well as the silicon SB detector using 1.3-MeV proton microbeam. CCE degradations in the both detectors for 4.5-MeV proton beam fluences are compared.

Proton Beam Writing (PBW) is a direct-write technique for producing high-aspect-ratio micro- and nano-structures in resist material. This technique is a promising method for micromachining of commodity plastics such as acrylic resin. In this paper, we introduce fabrication of microscopic devices made of a relatively thick ($$sim$$75 $$mu$$m) acrylic sheet. An optimization of the fluence of 3 MeV proton beam to induce the chain scission in the sheet was performed at Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute, JAEA. A software program that converts image pixels into coordinates data has been developed, and a fine jigsaw puzzle was fabricated on the sheet. The piece size of jigsaw puzzle is 50 $$times$$ 50 $$mu$$m. For practical use, A line and space test-chart for spatial resolution measurement on neutron radiography was also successfully created.

Imaging of Li distribution in Li-ion batteries by Particle-Induced Gamma Ray Emission using proton microbeam

The micro-meter scale distribution of Li in a positive electrode of a Li-ion battery contains Li$$_{rm x}$$Ni$$_{0.75}$$Co$$_{0.15}$$Al$$_{0.05}$$Mg$$_{0.05}$$O$$_{2}$$ (x = 1.05$$sim$$0.5) micro particles was imaged by micro-PIGE (Particle-Induced Gamma Ray Emission) technique with the beam diameter of 1$$sim$$1.5 $$mu$$m at Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application facility. In the experiments, measurements were made on the cross section of a positive electrode which was disassembled from the Li-ion battery after rapid charging. As a result, we found that the Li concentration distribution is non-uniform along the depth direction as is expected from the Li diffusion velocity and the charging speed of the sample. This results show that the IBMA is a powerful tool for the diagnostics of the Li-ion batteries and also for that of other battery structures under various charge and discharge conditions. Those data are expected to be useful for the R&D of the advanced batteries.
